Dr. Smita U. Varshney, MD

Dr. Smita U. Varshney is a board-certified Geriatric Psychiatrist practicing in Georgia since 2000. She completed her Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship from Emory University. She completed graduate work in Bio-Medical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Powai- Mumbai in 1989-90. Her unique background helped her in developing a nonpharmacological intervention AlzhaTV. She has implemented AlzhaTV at a nursing home dementia unit for over one year. The use of AlzhaTV non-pharmacological intervention helped significantly decrease the use of psychotropic medications, falls, and nurse burnout. There was 90% reduction in use of antipsychotic drugs and Benzodiazepines and over 60% reduction in use of antidepressant medications. Her work continues at other facilities.
